More than 21,000 participants from over 40 countries and regions ran the Xiamen Marathon on Sunday. In spite of the cool and rainy weather, most starting runners completed the course. Ethiopian athletes swept the top three men and women groups. Dejene Debela claimed the men's title and finished the race in 2:11:22, while Fatuma Sado Dergo grabbed the women's title with a time of 2:26:41.
The marathon this year ran almost entirely along the Island Ring Boulevard. For the first time in the marathon's 15-year history, participants set off in staggered groups based on entrants' previous marathon performances. The A group ran at 7:30 a.m. while the B group started at 7:55 a.m. and the C group at 8:20 a.m. Chinese citizens earned a total of 224,000 yuan in prize money. Li Chunhun claimed the domestic men's group with a time of 2:19:08, and Jiao Anjing won the title of women's group with 2:46:11.
The China Marathon Expo at the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center preceded the marathon with a Thursday kick-off. Xiamen received the title of Marathon City from the China Athletic Association during the three-day event, the first time a Chinese mainland city has earned the title.
