Noted sculptor and professor Yi Shi passed away on June 26 at the age of 93. She is perhaps best known for her work on the statue of Zheng Chenggong on Gulangyu.

　　Ms. She taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In the 1980s she formed a creative group with sculptors such as Li Weisi, Sun Xilin, Wang Jiquan, and Cao Heng to create the oversized statue of Zheng Chenggong. The 1,600-ton statue includes 626 granite blocks in 23 layers. Completed in 1985, the 15-meter-hight statue was built to withstand both earthquakes and typhoons.
