More than 100,000 Iraqi soldiers backed up by 700 tanks invaded the Gulf state of Kuwait on this day in 1990 in an effort to gain more control over the region's lucrative oil supplies. After a military intervention by a United Nations-authorized coalition of forces, Iraqi president Saddam Hussein signed a cease-fire agreement agreeing to surrender all weapons of mass destruction and to pay damages for its seven-month occupation of Kuwait.
